Energy Complaint Timeline Checker

Work out when eight weeks have passed since your complaint, and understand how a deadlock letter changes the timing.

Check the eight-week date

Enter the date you first raised this complaint with your energy supplier. This is a timing check for an unresolved household energy complaint; it is not an eligibility decision or a guaranteed resolution date. Nothing you enter is sent to a supplier or saved by BillDecoded.

Enter your complaint date to see the timing.

Which date starts the clock?

Use the first date you complained to your supplier about this issue. Keep the email, webchat transcript, complaint reference or a note of the call. If you do not know the date, ask the supplier to confirm when it registered the complaint. Do not substitute the date of the bill unless that was also when you complained.

The tool adds 56 calendar days, including weekends and bank holidays. For example, a complaint raised on 1 September 2026 reaches eight weeks on 27 October 2026. That is a referral timing check, not a promise that the dispute will be resolved then.

Deadlock can open the route earlier

A final response saying the supplier cannot resolve the dispute may let you go to the Energy Ombudsman before eight weeks. Read the letter and its referral instructions. The Ombudsman says to refer within 12 months of receiving a deadlock letter. If an older letter may be out of time, ask the Ombudsman directly rather than relying on this tool.

Eight weeks or six?

The Energy Ombudsman’s current process, checked on 11 September 2026, says eight weeks without resolution, or a deadlock/final response earlier. A proposed shorter supplier waiting period is not used here unless the operational rules change. The time an investigation takes after referral is a separate stage.

Read the investigation timeline. The scheme decides whether it can accept your particular complaint, including the provider, issue and any time limits. For urgent affordability or supply problems, seek help from your supplier and Citizens Advice now rather than waiting for this date.
