Terms of Use

Last updated: 20 August 2026

By using billdecoded.co.uk you accept these terms. They are short on purpose.

What this site is

BillDecoded publishes free information about UK household energy billing: how bills are calculated, what the Ofgem rules say, how to check a meter reading, and how the complaints and Energy Ombudsman process works. Everything is free to read and there is nothing to buy.

What this site is not

  • Not legal advice. We describe how rules generally work. We cannot tell you what will happen in your specific case.
  • Not regulated financial advice. Nothing here is a personal recommendation about a financial product, tariff or supplier.
  • Not a supplier, broker, switching service or comparison site. We sell nothing and switch nothing.
  • Not the Energy Ombudsman, Ofgem or Citizens Advice, and not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any of them, or to any energy supplier. We link to them because they are the correct route for things we cannot do.
  • Not able to act on your behalf. We cannot contact your supplier, access your account or represent you.

If you need advice on your own situation, Citizens Advice is free and independent. If you need legal advice, speak to a solicitor.

Accuracy

We work hard to get this right and we date every page. Even so:

  • Rates change quarterly. The Ofgem price cap is reset every three months. Figures on this site are correct for the period stated on the page.
  • Rules change. Licence conditions and complaint timescales are amended. Where a change has been announced but is not yet in force, we say so.
  • Suppliers differ in how they apply rules in practice.

Always check the figures on your own bill and the current position with the official source before relying on anything. If you find something out of date or wrong, tell us — corrections get priority.

Calculators and templates

The calculators are sense-checks. They run entirely in your browser, we never see the numbers you enter, and a result is not proof that a bill is right or wrong — it is a reason to ask a better question.

The complaint templates are starting points. Read them, change them to fit your situation, and check the facts you insert are yours. Sending a template unchanged is rarely the strongest version of your complaint.

Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, BillDecoded is not liable for any loss arising from use of the information, calculators or templates on this site. Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded. This does not affect your statutory rights as a consumer.

External links

We link to third-party sites, mainly official ones, where they are the source or the right next step. We do not control their content and are not responsible for it.

Copyright

The text, tables, calculators and templates on this site are © BillDecoded. You are welcome to use a complaint template for your own energy dispute — that is what it is for. Republishing this site's content commercially, or at scale, requires permission. Quoting a short passage with a link back is fine.

Advertising

This site carries advertising, which is what keeps it free. Advertising is labelled and is separate from the guidance. Advertisers have no input into what the guides say, and we do not accept sponsored posts, paid links or affiliate placements within guidance. See the editorial policy.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and disputes are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.

Changes

We may update these terms. The date at the top shows when they last changed.
