How to use calculators properly

A calculator only helps when you separate usage cost from fixed daily charges and from account balancing. People often mix these together and then think the whole bill is wrong.

  • Use the kWh calculator for the variable element.
  • Add standing charge × billed days separately.
  • Treat direct debit as a payment plan, not as proof that the bill itself is correct or incorrect.
  • If the meter history looks odd, switch to the reading guides before doing more maths.
When a bill includes two tariffs in one period, or an Economy 7 day/night split, a single-rate calculator is only a first pass. Use it to sense-check, not to replace the actual tariff breakdown.
